VAGUE

VAGUE

« Najia Mehadji’s wave is a flow that originates in her mind and spreads onto the canvas through the painter’s body, at one with the brush. Drawing on her observation, the artist sometimes creates a pencil drawing on a plain sheet of paper, a longitudinal section of the sinuous line of the swell. The wave then drawn by the large Korean ink brush, dipped in white paint, the foam varying according to how much pigment is added by the painter, is a wave of interiority as much as an imitation of a natural phenomenon. Drawn in a sweeping, continuous gesture, in tune with the rhythm of the breath, it’s the fruit of the artist’s concentration and her experience of the line. Like the ocean wave, it has an element of unpredictability. Like the ocean wave, it is ineluctable, as affirmed by the mastery and assurance of the gesture. White on a black background, blue on a white background, the wave is rhythm and variation like the music of Bach which, sometimes, fills the studio.. »
