VOLUTE

 

Lorsque j’ai commencé à travailler les Volutes, je pensais à la fois aux vêtements que l’on trouve dans l’iconographie chrétienne, comme le linge blanc qui ceint les hanches du Christ, et également au turban dans la culture arabe. (…) L’idée que la première toile soit un linge, un drap, c’est tout à fait important symboliquement, car le drap, c’est le lieu où l’on dort, où l’on fait l’amour mais c’est aussi le linceul.

VOLUTE

 

When I started working on the Volutes, I was thinking about the clothes found in Christian iconography, like the white cloth around Christ’s hips, and also the turban in Arabic culture. (…) The idea that the first canvas is a cloth, a sheet, is very important symbolically, because the sheet is where you sleep, where you make love but it’s also the shroud.
